Stage 2: Fluids
Breastmilk or formula is the main drink in the first year of life, and water should given when needed.
- 700mls is about enough for most babies.
- In hot weather breastfeed more often if your baby is thirsty and offer water to bottle fed babies.
- In New Zealand, water needs to be boiled for the first 3 months of life if you are on town water supply, or 18 months if you are on tank or bore water.
- Water is the best drink for babies other than breastmilk or formula.
- Try offering water in a cup to get your baby use to drinking that way.
