Vitamins and Minerals

There are many nutrients you need more of when you are pregnant, and the best source of extra vitamins and minerals is a good balanced diet.  Some nutrients help your body absorb others!  Vitamin C helps you absorb

iron from non-meat foods, and Vitamin D, which is made when your skin is exposed to sunlight, actually helps your body absorb calcium. (If you don’t expose your skin to any sunlight, or keep yourself fully covered in clothing for most of the year, you may need to discuss a Vitamin D supplement with your doctor or LMC).

Sometimes you’ll need a supplement to help you get extra nutrition. Folic Acid is one such nutrient. Folic Acid is a B vitamin that is essential for you to take before conception, and during your pregnancy because it helps prevent birth defects like spina bifida. Your LMC will guide you to a suitable supplement.

Generally, the best source of vitamins, minerals and extra nutrients is from a good variety of nutritious foods. If you feel you may be missing out on an important nutrient and may need to take a supplement, talk to your doctor or LMC.
